Canning

Resolve to Be Prepared: at the Sandy Dry-Pack Cannery   801-561-8104
615 East 8400 South. Go through the fence to the NE corner of the building.

The Family Home Canning Center is open and not busy this time of year. If you need to stock up, now’s the time and you can’t beat their low prices. This cannery will continue to allow self-canning, although prepackaged items will be appearing in the future. Here are the answers to some questions you might have.

What do they have? flour, sugar, cocoa, pudding mix, rice, oats, beans, milk, pasta, potato flakes, and other dry items. You may can it there, or you can take home the big sacks and store in your own buckets. (The prices really are that good unless you find a super sale somewhere.) BUT you cannot bring outside food to can as you once could. All food must be purchased there. You pay a minimal amount for the cans, metal lids, plastic lids, and desiccant pouches.

Unusual exceptions: potato pearls (with the buttery flavoring) and pancake mix. They have a short shelf-life, and cannot be canned on site. You buy the big bag, cans, and lids, and they will LOAN you the sealing machine to use at home. (So maybe you can borrow the machine to can food you’ve purchased elsewhere, too.)

How do I pay? They take cash, (but don’t keep much change on hand), checks, and now take credit/debit cards as well.

Who can go help? Well-behaved (they were emphatic about this) helpers of any age (except toddlers) can help. They must be 16 to run the machinery, but younger ones can fill cans and apply labels.

How it works: Once a big bag of food is opened, the entire contents must be canned. BUT you may buy only what you need. The rest of the cans go on a shelf to be sold – and that is a good place to look anytime as the work is all done for you.

When can I go? Our Stake has 3 days left this year.
Thurs. Aug. 15 from 4-8;  Fri. Sept. 20 from 11-3;  and Fri. Nov. 15 from 11-3.
BUT those are just the times that we have priority. You can go any time that day, or go another day.

They ask that you CALL FIRST. 801-561-8104. They are running low on missionaries, and may have to close occasionally. This will be on the phone message. But they are usually not busy, and will probably tell you to come right on in.
They WILL be closed the entire week of Thanksgiving, as well as from Dec. 15 through the end of the year.  If you want to give food storage as Christmas presents, plan accordingly.

Green green grass

Remember for Spring ~ Add 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt to a gallon of water and spray your lawn for a lusher, greener lawn. Epsom salt is loaded with magnesium!

Removing a splinter

Today I read about two ways you can get a splinter out. The first was making a paste with baking soda and water and applying it to the area. Then cover it with a bandage and check it the next day. The splinter should have popped out and you can then remove it with tweezers. This could have been helpful last week when I needed it. Oh well, now I know for next time. The other way was using white glue. Apply glue around the area and let it completely dry. The glue can get in deep where the problem is and once its dry it will come off with the splinter attached. Hope this will be helpful to all.

Homemade Carpet Freshener

Natural Homemade Carpet Freshener

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 20-40 drops essential oil of choice
The baking soda is a natural carpet cleaner, and will help to remove any odors from your carpet.
The essential oils will not only leave a wonderful scent, but will also help to cleanse your carpet as well.
Pick essential oils that smell nice and have powerful cleansing properties. My two favorites for this are lavender and tea tree oil. I love the smell of both of them, and they both have potent antibacterial qualities.

To Make:

Mix baking soda and essential oils together, and put in a shaker container with holes in the lid (such as a large, empty spice container).
Let this mixture sit for 24 hours to allow the essential oil to permeate the baking soda.

To Use:

Sprinkle lightly over carpet. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, and then vacuum as usual.

Cleaning Solution

Soak orange peels in vinegar for two weeks in a sealed mason jar then pour the vinegar into a spray bottle. I like to add about a tablespoon of dish soap to mine.  Use as a non-toxic and yummy smelling green cleaner. I love using vinegar to clean with but have always wondered how to make it smell better. You can also use lemon peels as well. Enjoy!

Grocery Deals

Grocery shopping can be a challenge. Most of the stores are associated food stores and their ads vary only a little. But each store can have a few gems at stock up prices. You don't have to read all the ads that come in the paper or the mail, you can find them all on line:

Macey's http://www.maceys.com/weekly-ad ad runs Monday to Monday so each Monday has 2 full ads to shop from.

Ream's http://www.reamsfoods.com/weeklyad.aspx ad runs Tuesday to Monday

Fresh Market http://www.freshmarketstores.com/deals/weeklyAd.html ad runs Wed to Tues.

Harmon's  http://www.harmonsgrocery.com/ads/ ad runs Sunday to Sat. Sometimes has a deal of the day posted on the ad

Sprout's http://specials.sprouts.com/Shop/WeeklyAd.aspx ad runs Wed. to Wed so 2 full ads to shop from on Wed.

Winco does not have a weekly ad but does have good prices and has a great bulk department where you can buy spices, different types of flour and all sorts of things not just goodies.

OR - Walmart does ad match if you want to take them with you

Most of these stores will email you the ad each week if you sign up for it.
I drive by most of these stores at least once a week and if they have something I want to stock up on I will run in and get it.
Each week I will try to post some specials that are exceptional deals in my opinion.
Another source for good shopping tips is - The Grocery Guru http://gurusdeals.com/
Coupons can save money . There are some really great coupon web sites but someone else will have to fill us in on those at another time.
